Denizens of a true democracy care about a common good that promotes the general welfare of our nation. Basic universal healthcare fits that bill. Conservatives proclaim that we a Christian nation. If so, Christian teachings declare that we are our brother and sister's keeper. You can find words that assert that adage referenced among the pages of any religious doctrine you choose, regardless of its original source or its denominational spin-offs. You can find an argument in favor of a public option in the stories of the many Allen Hagglers from sea to shining sea. I am sick to death of the political showboating and narrow-minded parochialism espoused by opposition to a basic healthcare plan for the citizens of the wealthiest nation on Earth. The personal is always, by nature, political because for most people there's no reason to care about a common good issue until it climbs their doorsteps and moves in with them.
